The Teacher Development Trust is to merge with the Chartered College of Teaching

The Teacher Development Trust is to become part of the Chartered College of Teaching, the charity announced today.

The education charity, which is focused on improving teachers’ professional development, will officially join the Chartered College of Teaching this summer.

The Teacher Development Trust (TDT) said that becoming part of the college will allow its research and other work to continue to have an impact.

Vlog understands that the TDT’s chief executive, Gareth Conyard (pictured), will not continue in post after the merger.

The news comes after the education charity confirmed in 2024 that it will stop offering national professional qualifications (NPQs) and after it withdrew a bid to deliver the .

Final cohorts can complete NPQs

In the move announced today, the TDT will gift its assets and reserves to the college, which acts as a professional body for teachers.

Both the TDT and the college said they are committed to completing the delivery of the final cohorts and resit assessments associated with NPQs, which will conclude in October 2026.

The education charity was founded in 2012 by David Monis-Weston, who is also a founding fellow of the Chartered College. It has worked with more than 10,000 school leaders on initiatives to improve teacher development.

The TDT’s research has also found that hundreds of millions of pounds are being “wasted” every year on ineffective CPD.

Mr Conyard said: “This is an exciting opportunity to advance the cause of effective teacher and school leader professional development.”

He added: “TDT has been a strong supporter of the college since its inception, and I am delighted its team is keen to take on the mission of TDT. Growing the impact of the TDT’s work through the college offers the profession the scale and nuance around professional development that it so richly deserves.”

Vlog understands that all 15 TDT staff, including Mr Conyard, will be made redundant.

College to continue TDT’s ‘vital work’

Dame Alison Peacock (pictured), CEO of the Chartered College of Teaching, said that the college would continue TDT’s “important work”.

She added: “TDT has had a significant impact on the CPD landscape, supporting teachers and leaders, monitoring the quality of professional development and challenging the thinking of policymakers and partners.

“We have worked closely together for almost a decade and by building on their vital work, we will continue to empower the profession and improve education for all.”
