Royal Grammar School, Guildford (RGSG) has announced plans to open four schools in India, doubling the number of overseas schools it operates in one deal.
The first to open - in Bengaluru, in the southern state of Karnataka - will deliver the British curriculum to pupils aged 3-18. The locations of the other three schools have not been revealed yet.
RGSG did confirm, though, that Bengaluru is due to open in September 2028 and will initially take pupils aged 3 to 11, before welcoming secondary-aged pupils in subsequent years.
RGSG International managing director Alastair Morrison told Vlog the school had decided to enter the Indian market due to the “exceptional opportunity” the nation has for educational growth.
“It launched its National Education Plan back in 2020 to overhaul and internationalise the whole system, with a very clear commitment to quality in education,” he said.
He added that the introduction of a new nation to RGSG’s portfolio - the other schools are in China, Oman, Dubai and Qatar - would bring benefits to all.
“The possibilities for cultural learning between our schools are really positive - especially as India is such a key player in the global market.”
Morrison also said this was not likely to be the last new school announcement RGSG would make, although he didn’t divulge any specifics.
“We are looking to grow and diversify, but with a measured approach that is about creating deep, meaningful partnerships - we don’t want to just go around adding volume and numbers. However, it’s too early to say exactly what any expansion will look like.”
The move into India underlines the nation’s demand for private schools, with researchers predicting it will overtake China to become the top nation for international schools in the years ahead.
The deal comes amid the ongoing growth of private schools’ international portfolios, such as Wellington’s plans for a new school in Nigeria.
