Osaka Japan

Brighton College has announced it will open a school in Japan in September 2028, adding yet another new destination to its growing portfolio of overseas campuses.

The school, which will be based in the city of Hirakata in Osaka Prefecture, will open first with a prep school and then add a senior school and sixth form in 2029.

It is being opened in partnership with Kansai Gaidai University Educational Foundation, and comes just over a year after it unveiled plans to open three new campuses in Europe, in Madrid, Rome and Lisbon.

Writing on LinkedIn , Richard Cairns, CEO and principal of the Brighton College family of schools, said the location would guarantee strong demand for places.

“With a population of just under 22 million people in Kansai [the region in which Osaka Prefecture is based], our two campuses are well placed to attract children from across this dynamic and culturally rich region, he wrote.

“With an outstanding boarding provision planned too, we also anticipate demand from across Asia.

Opportunity for ‘shared learning and connections’

He added: “It will be wonderful to welcome pupils and teachers in Japan into our international family, with all the possibilities that brings for shared learning, friendship and connections across the world.

Japan has become an attractive market for private school brands, with Rugby and Malvern both operating schools in Tokyo, and Gordonstoun planning an opening in Wakayama next September.

Cairn’s social media post also said this would be the eighteenth school in the group - and revealed another will be unveiled next month, taking the total to 19.

The other recent locations include two schools in Saudi Arabia, announced last month.
