Light up your maths provision with this colourful, practical firework resource from Bond & Blossom.

Designed for Nursery and Reception, Light Up the Sky invites children to create their own star arrangements, match quantities, compare two skies and explore different ways to split a total.

Activities within 5 are clearly distinguished from extensions to 10, helping adults choose an appropriate starting point.

What’s included?

A complete 16-page A4 landscape PDF containing:

  • 10 counting mats, covering quantities 1–10, with large numerals, five-frame or ten-frame references and spacious, empty skies.
  • Two pages of quantity-matching cards: 20 cut-apart cards matching dots and stars within 5 and within 10.
  • One comparison mat for exploring more, fewer and the same number.
  • Two part–whole exploration mats: “Five Stars, Two Skiesâ€ and “Ten Stars, Two Skiesâ€.
  • One adult guidance page with preparation advice, practical suggestions and prompts to support mathematical talk.

What can children explore?

  • Recognising small quantities without counting: subitising within 5.
  • Counting objects and matching quantities to numerals.
  • Noticing “five and some moreâ€ using ten-frames and grouped stars.
  • Matching different representations of the same amount.
  • Comparing quantities through one-to-one matching.
  • Splitting and recombining five or ten objects, noticing that the total stays the same.

For quantities 6–10, structured arrangements support children to notice smaller groups and count to check. Children are not expected to recognise larger quantities instantly.

Practical maths through purposeful play

Add star counters, large buttons or other suitable loose parts, or invite children to draw their stars. The open activity spaces allow children to create their own arrangements, move objects and try another way.

Short instructions and adult prompts support discussion without requiring independent reading or numeral writing. Use the mats for adult-supported maths provision, small-group exploration or a Bonfire Night learning invitation.

Bold lettering, torn-paper layers and rich firework colours coordinate with the wider Bond & Blossom firework collection.

Preparation

Print in A4 landscape using “Fit to printable area. Laminate the mats for repeated use and cut out the matching cards before use. Choose loose parts appropriate to the children and supervise their use.

Please note: This is a printable PDF digital download. Physical counters, loose parts and other firework resources are not included.
