This 6-lesson bundle is the second part in a complete series of resources I have created for AQA GCSE 9–1 Germany 1890–1945: Democracy and Dictatorship.

Designed specifically for the AQA GCSE History specification, this bundle provides a structured teaching sequence covering the Wall Street Crash, the rise of the Nazis, the transformation of the Nazi Party, Hitler becoming Chancellor, the Reichstag Fire, the Enabling Act, the Night of the Long Knives and the establishment of the Nazi Police State.

The lessons combine detailed contextual knowledge with regular GCSE examination practice, helping students develop the skills required to achieve the highest grades. Rather than simply learning the content, students are repeatedly challenged to explain, analyse, evaluate and reach substantiated judgements.

The lessons will allow students to demonstrate (AO1) knowledge and understanding of the key features and characteristics of the period studied, including the impact of the Wall Street Crash, the transformation of the Nazi Party into an increasingly successful electoral force and the establishment of Hitler’s dictatorship.

They will study (AO2) second-order concepts such as change and continuity in Germany’s economic and political problems, as well as the causes and consequences of Hitler becoming Chancellor.

The analysis and evaluation of sources (AO3) are developed through activities such as those included in the Night of the Long Knives lesson, while substantiated judgements (AO4) are developed through questions examining the establishment of Nazi control and the limited opposition to Hitler as Germany moved from democracy towards dictatorship.

The lessons are designed to be engaging, challenging and ready to teach, while also being fully editable, allowing you to adapt and change the resources to suit your own students and teaching style.

The lessons are as follows:
L1 The Wall Street Crash
L2 The Rise of the Nazis and the Nazi Party
L3 Hitler Becomes Chancellor (Free resource)
L4 The Reichstag Fire and Enabling Act
L5 The Night of the Long Knives
L6 The Nazi Police State

Included within this Bundle:
6 fully editable PowerPoint lessons
Complete teaching sequence covering the rise of Hitler and the establishment of Nazi dictatorship
GCSE examination practice throughout, with model answers to support students
Retrieval practice activities
Source analysis and evaluation activities
Higher-order thinking tasks
Suggested teaching strategies
Enquiry-based learning activities
Supported judgement and evaluation tasks
Differentiated materials suitable for mixed-ability GCSE classes

The lessons are designed to build students’ knowledge, understanding and examination skills progressively, making this bundle particularly useful for teachers looking for ready-to-use AQA Germany resources that combine detailed content coverage with GCSE exam preparation.

After completing this unit, I strongly recommend setting a full GCSE mock examination to assess students’ knowledge and identify areas for further revision.
