The aim of this lesson is to assess the impact of the Wall Street Crash and the Great Depression on Germany and understand why these events created such serious economic and social problems for the Weimar Republic.

Students begin by establishing a clear understanding of the difference between the Wall Street Crash, the Great Depression and hyperinflation. This is an important distinction as students often confuse the economic crisis of 1923 with the Depression of 1929 onwards. The lesson clearly explains how these were different crises with different causes and consequences.

Students explore how the Wall Street Crash developed in America before investigating how the resulting Great Depression affected Germany. Using a combination of video footage, visual sources and a written account from someone who experienced the Depression, students examine the impact on ordinary German people, including unemployment, poverty and falling living standards.

The lesson encourages students to make clear links between the economic crisis and its impact on German society, helping them understand why the Depression became such a serious problem for the Weimar Republic. Students are also encouraged to consider why Germany was particularly vulnerable to the effects of the Depression.

Students then apply their knowledge to a GCSE exam practice question, using the evidence provided to box up and organise their answers before constructing their response. This helps students develop their ability to select relevant knowledge and evidence when answering an exam question.

The lesson concludes with a Find and Fix plenary, allowing students to identify and correct mistakes in their understanding and demonstrate how much they have learned about the effects of the Depression on Germany.

An enquiry question is introduced at the start of the lesson and revisited throughout, allowing students to track their progress and develop a clear judgement about the impact of the Wall Street Crash and Great Depression on Germany.
