Help middle school students build a practical understanding of investing through this engaging 6-week financial literacy unit for Grades 6–8. Students explore inflation, compound growth, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, fees, risk, diversification, and portfolio management through reading, financial math, data analysis, case studies, simulations, spreadsheet modeling, and argument writing.

Please note: This listing includes the Unit 5 student book only. The accompanying teacher resources and bonus materials support the complete six-unit, 30-week Personal Finance curriculum.

The 84-page student unit covers Weeks 25–30. Each week includes an essential question, learning targets, original reading, comprehension, vocabulary, 10 financial math problems, data analysis, a realistic case study, hands-on application, spreadsheet modeling, argument writing, review, and extension activities.

Students begin by investigating inflation, purchasing power, real versus nominal returns, compound growth, time horizons, the Rule of 72, and the cost of delaying investing. The Compounding and Inflation Lab has students model long-term growth and compare different starting ages and return assumptions.

The stocks lesson explores ownership, dividends, capital gains, market capitalization, volatility, indexes, and speculation.

Students then compare bonds and stocks by examining lending versus ownership, coupon rates, maturity, yield, credit ratings, and default risk.

The mutual funds lesson covers mutual funds, index funds, ETFs, expense ratios, active and passive management, NAV, and benchmarks.

The risk and diversification lesson introduces specific and market risk, correlation, risk tolerance, and rebalancing. Students construct portfolios for different time horizons and use simulations to observe how allocations respond to market shocks.

The unit culminates in a Twelve-Round Portfolio Simulation. Students create an investment policy, build a portfolio, respond to simulated market events, track performance, compare results with a benchmark, calculate drawdown and annualized return, and explain their decisions.

Key activities include the Compounding and Inflation Lab, Total Return Investigation, Bond Pricing Investigation, Fee Impact Investigation, Portfolio Construction Simulation, and Twelve-Round Portfolio Simulation.

Students develop investing knowledge, financial math, spreadsheet modeling, risk analysis, and evidence-based decision-making skills. Alignment includes CEE, Jump$tart, and Common Core mathematics and ELA standards.

This Investing unit goes beyond memorizing financial vocabulary by helping students understand how time, inflation, diversification, and investment choices affect long-term outcomes. Students finish with practical experience building, managing, and evaluating a portfolio using numbers, evidence, and sound financial reasoning.
