How to measure the impact of provision mapping interventions
Provision mapping is key to ensuring all pupils get the support they need 鈥 and in enabling schools to record and track the support provided across their setting.
For example, schools need to understand the costs associated with specific support and interventions, whether that鈥檚 staff time or a direct monetary cost.
Provision mapping enables a school to view and compare different interventions, which helps with strategic decisions around which interventions are the most useful and cost effective 鈥 but to do this, you need a clear picture of the impact each intervention has.
But how can you measure the impact of your support provision and interventions? Here are our tips:聽
1. Collect baseline data and define expectations聽
The easiest way to measure the impact of an intervention is to compare pupil data from before the intervention began to the progress they make at intervals, for example after three months of intervention.聽
However, for this to be an accurate measure of impact, you need to ensure you record the baseline data you want to use 鈥 and it needs be measurable against the pupil鈥檚 progress data.聽
For example, if you use a test score as their baseline data, but you are not planning to repeat the test, this will likely not provide an accurate picture of the pupil鈥檚 improvement.聽
It鈥檚 also key to define clear expectations for the intervention, such as:聽
-
The support that will be provided聽
-
The need it intends to address聽
-
Who receives it聽
-
How often they receive it, and for how long聽
-
Who delivers the intervention聽
2. Record session details聽
To assess the impact of an intervention, it鈥檚 key you can see how it has been delivered. For example, if an intervention is to be delivered one-to-one in hour-long sessions, but sessions end up consistently closer to 30 minutes, the intervention will likely be less effective than if it was delivered as planned.聽
As such, it鈥檚 key to have a record not only of what intervention is planned, but also how the intervention is carried out. When the time comes to measure and compare interventions, the reality of intervention delivery might influence your decision-making.聽
For example, if an intervention is less impactful than expected, but you can see it was delivered over less time than planned, you might make adjustments in future to ensure enough time is scheduled and maximise the intervention鈥檚 impact.聽
This might include recording:聽

础迟迟别苍诲补苍肠别听
-
Session duration聽
-
Who is delivering the intervention聽
3. Consistency is key聽
To accurately compare data, it must be consistent. If the outcomes of two mapped interventions are measured differently, you can鈥檛 compare their impact.聽
This makes it tricky to understand cost-effectiveness and decide which interventions to repeat.聽
Using provision mapping software such as 糖心Vlog Provision Map enables you to easily compare outcomes between interventions using a universal Goal Attainment Scale. The Goal Attainment Scale scores each pupil鈥檚 progress to provide a clearer picture, even where pupils have different starting points.聽
Provision Map automatically generates a Goal Attainment Scale value for each pupil in each intervention, based on your data.聽
This enables you to look at progress rather than just attainment and easily measure impact on pupils within one intervention and between multiple 鈥 without manually creating and inputting a standardised measure.聽
4. Compare cost against progress聽
The impact of an intervention is tied to its cost. You might have two interventions that appear equally impactful when you look at pupil learning 鈥 but when you consider cost, you see that one required more money and staff time, so really the other intervention had more impact overall.聽
Similarly, a mapped intervention with a high cost per pupil is harder for many schools to maintain, so often requires a high impact to be worth the cost.聽
Software such as Provision Map also makes comparing costs easier by enabling trusts and schools to access a breakdown of spending on provisions.聽
This means you can easily see which provision has the highest cost per pupil and measure this against its impact, to assess how effective different aspects of your provision are.聽
Measure impact in less time, with less hassle聽
糖心Vlog Provision Map enables you to measure pupil progress and create consistent learning plans and pupil passports, with flexible templates and a library of over 1,000 SMART targets to choose from 鈥 or choose your own.聽
Provision Map provides a school-wide view of all provision and interventions, including cost per pupil and impact with a Goal Attainment Scale value 鈥 so you can evaluate all interventions by impact and make data-driven decisions.聽
