Help middle school students understand credit, credit scores, loans, interest, and responsible borrowing through realistic financial decisions, calculations, case studies, and hands-on activities. This 6-week Credit unit for Grades 6–8 moves beyond vocabulary to help students investigate how borrowing works and what it really costs.

Please note: This listing includes the Unit 4 student book only. The accompanying teacher resources and bonus materials support the complete six-unit, 30-week Personal Finance curriculum.

The 86-page student unit covers Weeks 19–24. Each week includes an essential question, learning targets, original reading, comprehension, vocabulary, 10 financial math problems, data analysis, a realistic case study, hands-on application, spreadsheet modeling, argument writing, review, and extension activities.

Students begin with credit basics, exploring creditors, credit reports, credit bureaus, revolving and installment credit, secured and unsecured loans, collateral, default, and consumer rights.

The credit-score lesson examines payment history, credit utilization, length of credit history, hard and soft inquiries, and credit mix. Students calculate utilization, analyze scoring factors, and test common credit-score myths.

Students then explore loan amortization, principal, APR, loan terms, extra payments, refinancing, and total borrowing costs. They calculate interest, compare loan terms, model repayment schedules, and examine how extra principal payments affect payoff.

The interest lesson focuses on minimum payments, grace periods, compounding, payday loans, debt avalanche, debt snowball, and cash advances. Students compare repayment strategies and evaluate the true cost of high-cost borrowing.

The responsible borrowing lesson introduces debt-to-income ratios, appreciating and depreciating assets, co-signers, predatory lending, debt traps, creditworthiness, and refinancing. Students use a Borrowing Decision Framework to evaluate realistic borrowing scenarios.

The unit culminates in a Loan Comparison Case Study. Students compare offers using APR, fees, total cost, prepayment penalties, effective cost, break-even points, and early-payoff scenarios before making a defensible recommendation.

Key activities include Credit Report Investigation, Score Factor Simulation, Loan and Amortization Modeling, Borrowing Decision Framework, Borrowing Decision Model, and Loan Comparison Case Study.

Students develop credit literacy, financial math, spreadsheet modeling, consumer awareness, critical thinking, and evidence-based decision-making skills. Alignment includes CEE, Jump$tart, and Common Core mathematics and ELA standards.

This Credit unit helps students look beyond monthly payments and advertised rates to ask better questions about APR, interest, fees, loan terms, repayment strategies, and whether borrowing is actually the right financial decision.
