Why do we celebrate Bonfire Night?

Introduce Nursery and Reception children to the story behind 5th November with Discover Bonfire Night, a beautifully illustrated, 12-slide presentation from Bond & Blossom.

Short explanations, picture-supported vocabulary and “Let’s Talk prompts encourage children to explore the past, share their experiences and discover why bonfires and fireworks mark the occasion.

The story explains that the Gunpowder Plot was stopped before the planned explosion happened. Events are presented calmly, without graphic violence or punishment, with additional historical context in the adult speaker notes.

What’s included?

  • A 12-slide A4 landscape PowerPoint with adult speaker notes.
  • A matching 12-page PDF.
  • Two family versions: a mum-and-dad family and a two-dad family on “Bonfire Night Todayâ€, with identical learning content.
  • Picture-supported vocabulary and a discussion prompt on every slide.

What will children explore?

  • King James the First and a story from 1605.
  • Parliament, Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot.
  • The warning letter and how the plan was discovered.
  • Why bonfires and fireworks mark the occasion.
  • Bonfire Night today, including warm food and time together.
  • Watching safely alongside grown-ups.
  • Different ways to enjoy the occasion, including ear defenders, watching indoors and quiet firework art.

Designed for early years

Use for adult-led carpet time, small-group discussion or an introduction to a Bonfire Night topic. Choose the pace and level of detail to suit your children.

The presentation supports Communication and Language and Understanding the World, offering opportunities to talk about past and present, celebrations and family experiences.

Warm illustrations, autumn details and bold, playful headings bring the recognisable Bond & Blossom style to your classroom.

Please note: This is a digital download. The illustrated slide artwork is fixed; adult speaker notes are editable in PowerPoint. The two family versions provide an alternative illustration on one slide, rather than two different lessons.
