The Anglo-Saxons is an engaging聽topic to teach within the primary classroom. Learning all about who they were聽and聽how聽they settled and lived聽develops聽primary pupils'聽knowledge of聽the history of Britain聽and allows them to discover more about how times have changed over聽the centuries.聽

Who were the Anglo-Saxons?聽

The Anglo-Saxons were聽the people who聽came to live聽in聽England聽in聽around 410AD,聽after the Romans had left. They originally came from聽different聽parts聽of聽Europe,聽mainly Germany,聽Denmark聽and the Netherlands,聽and聽consisted of聽several聽tribes, the biggest being the Anglos, the聽Saxons聽and the Jutes.聽聽

The聽Anglo-Saxons聽travelled to England on ships and聽settled in various places, forming new kingdoms.聽During their rule,聽Britain was separated into seven kingdoms: East Anglia, Essex, Kent, Mercia, Northumbria, Sussex, Wessex. Each of the聽kingdoms were ruled by a King and聽they often fought each other聽for聽power and land.聽聽

The Anglo-Saxons era lasted in England until 1066 when William the Conqueror took control following his victory at the Battle of Hastings and the Normans seized power.聽

Anglo-Saxon invasions and settlements聽

The Anglo-Saxons invaded Angle-land (England) over聽a period of time聽with different tribes聽arriving in waves for聽various聽reasons.聽Some had been asked to fight in England to help defend Britons against invasion聽as they were seen to be聽skilled聽fighters.聽Others聽came聽as the land was more fertile so they could farm and grow crops聽which they were struggling to do in their homelands due to flooding.聽

Once they had settled in England,聽Anglo-Saxons聽lived in village聽communities. Their聽houses were聽typically聽made of wood聽or聽wattle and daub聽with thatched roofs聽and聽generally consisted聽of聽a single room with a聽place for a fire.聽The villages聽were usually within a fenced area聽called a palisade聽to protect them聽and their livestock聽from wild animals and other invaders.聽聽

Anglo-Saxon life聽

Most Anglo-Saxons were farmers. They lived off the land and made ploughs and tools聽to enable them to do this.聽Their diet consisted of foods聽that聽they grew聽(grains聽and聽vegetables),聽foraged (fruits)聽or聽that were聽produced by their animals聽(eggs, milk). Meat was聽also聽eaten - however, this聽was聽generally聽only聽consumed by the wealthy聽as poorer families聽couldn鈥檛聽afford it.聽Ale聽and mead聽were聽the most聽popular drinks,聽even聽with聽children, as聽they were聽safer than the water available.聽

The Anglo-Saxons聽were skilled craftspeople. They聽crafted with wood, made聽textiles聽through聽weaving聽and聽created聽intricate聽jewellery from metal.聽Items that were made could be traded聽for other resources聽that聽they聽needed.聽聽

During the Anglo-Saxon period, childhood was much shorter as children were considered adults from around the age of 10.聽There was no formal education. Children聽would聽help their parents with work and would often learn their聽parents鈥櫬爐rades聽and skills; boys would learn skills such as farming or carpentry and girls would learn skills such as weaving,聽cooking聽and spinning.聽

At the end of life, Anglo-Saxons聽were buried or cremated. Their聽graves聽would include聽grave goods聽including聽items such as聽jewellery,聽weaponry聽and tools.聽These graves聽provided聽valuable聽insights聽into the person鈥檚 life,聽wealth聽and聽position in society.聽聽

One of the most famous Anglo-Saxon burial sites to have been discovered聽is聽at聽Sutton Hoo.聽It was discovered聽by archaeologists聽in 1939 and has聽since聽revealed remarkable details聽about聽Anglo-Saxon聽life,聽traditions聽and beliefs.聽

Anglo-Saxon religion and beliefs聽

When the Anglo-Saxons first arrived in England, most held pagan beliefs.聽They聽believed in many deities, including聽Woden聽(king聽of the Gods), Thunor聽(God of thunder), Tiw聽(God of war)聽and Frige聽(Goddess of love, marriage),聽and聽had many rituals and聽superstitions.聽聽

However,聽over time聽many Anglo-Saxons聽converted to Christianity.聽This was due to Pope Gregory sending聽a group of monks to Britain to convert the people to聽the Christian faith. One of the most notable聽missionaries聽to be sent to do this was St Augustine who聽successfully聽converted King Ethelbert of Kent.聽
