Create a patterned desert landscape with this Zentangle-inspired art lesson for KS2 and KS3. Includes an A4 template, instructions and an example.

Pupils transform a desert outline into a colourful composition filled with repeated lines, dots, waves and shapes. They invent a different pattern for each section, creating variety across the sky, cacti and rolling hills.

The landscape template provides a starting point while leaving pupils free to develop their own patterns and colour combinations.

What’s included:
• Teacher instruction sheet with five practical steps, printing guidance and a quick assessment checklist.
• A4 printable desert landscape template.
• Full-colour finished example with an extra pattern challenge.

Pupils practise:
• Inventing and repeating patterns.
• Varying lines, shapes and marks.
• Creating contrast between neighbouring sections.
• Combining black outlines with careful colouring.

Age range: 10–14 years — upper KS2 and KS3.
Time: approximately 30 minutes; allow longer for intricate patterns.
Materials: pencil, rubber, black fineliner, coloured pencils or felt-tip pens.
Format: 3-page A4 PDF. The template can also be enlarged to A3.

The finished example offers inspiration. Pupils are encouraged to invent their own patterns and choose their own colours.
