A complete KS3 Food Preparation and Nutrition lesson exploring protein, amino acids, High Biological Value (HBV), Low Biological Value (LBV) and complementary proteins.

Designed as a full 100-minute Year 8 Food Technology lesson, this resource develops students’ understanding of the role and nutritional quality of protein while building knowledge and terminology that supports progression towards GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition.

Students begin by retrieving prior knowledge of nutrients and the Eatwell Guide before exploring the functions of protein and the role of amino acids. They then investigate the difference between HBV and LBV proteins, challenge misconceptions surrounding animal and plant protein sources and apply their understanding of complementary proteins.

The lesson includes a range of active learning and assessment opportunities, including a protein food sorting challenge, Think-Pair-Share questioning, HBV/LBV classification activities, a balanced-meal client brief and a 4-mark exam-style question with model answer.
