In this final lesson of the unit, students apply all their prior learning rhythm, pitch, scales, and melody writing to compose original pieces inspired by poetry and lyrics. Using lines such as “Say this city has ten million souls…”, learners explore how language rhythm and musical phrasing connect.

The lesson introduces the concept of question and answer phrases, helping students see melody as a conversation. Through analysis, discussion, and composition, they learn how to shape musical ideas that respond to poetic rhythm and emotion. By the end, students will have composed a short melody that demonstrates expressive phrasing, rhythmic variety, and understanding of major/minor tonality.
