“Attention, Crew! The HMS Newton has suffered a total power failure at 5,000 metres. The ballast pumps are locked. To restart the engines and surface the submarine, you must solve 10 multi-step deep-sea overrides. Each answer contains one digit of the Abyss Code. Estimated time to hull failure: 45 minutes! Do you copy?”

Dive into a high-stakes, cinematic maths adventure! This Submarine SOS Escape Room is a fully immersive, “zero-prep” resource designed to challenge Year 6 pupils with rigorous National Curriculum objectives through a gripping underwater emergency. It is an ideal tool for SATs Paper 2 and 3 preparation, end-of-term rewards, or a spectacular hook for a “Blue Abyss” or “STEM” topic.

The Mission Structure

This resource uses a high-engagement “Hybrid” format:

The Surface Control Panel (PowerPoint): This serves as the mission hub. It features a dramatic sonar briefing, an automated 45-minute countdown timer with atmospheric ocean sound effects, and a final “Ballast Keypad” screen where teams enter their digits.

The Submarine Overrides (Pupil Booklet): Pupils work in “Navigational Teams” to solve 10 intricate riddles—from Sonar Calibration to the Specimen Lab. Each solved riddle reveals one specific digit of the 10-digit Abyss Code.

What’s Included in the Pack?

Cinematic PowerPoint Presentation: 16 high-quality slides that manage the game flow, story, and the ticking clock.

Pupil Worksheet Booklet: A 10-lock printable workbook where students show their working out for every multi-step problem.

Teacher’s Mark Scheme: A complete guide with intermediate steps and final answers for all 10 locks.

Self-Assessment Plenary: A reflection tool for pupils to evaluate their maths confidence and team performance.

National Curriculum (Year 6) Mapping:

This mission targets fundamental Upper Key Stage 2 (UKS2) domains through SATs-style reasoning:

Bioluminescent Shoals: Multiplication, Addition & Division

Fuel Gauge Failure: Fractions & Percentages of Amounts

Cargo Bay Blueprint: Area of Rectilinear Shapes & Subtraction

Sonar Calibration: Ratio & Proportion

Creature Count Log: Statistics (Mean & Missing Values)

Engine Gears: Algebra (Substitution & Two-step Equations)

Air Cylinders: Volume & Measurement Conversion

Nautical Clock: Time & Intervals (24-hour clock)

Specimen Lab: Decimals & Money (Multi-step)

Depth Gauge: Rounding & Place Value (Up to 1,000,000)

Crew, the pressure is rising! Grab your gear and surface the HMS Newton!
