A Year 4 reading test in the style of the KS2 reading paper. Pupils read three original texts – a story, a non-fiction text and a poem – and answer 26 questions worth 30 marks. Every question is coded to a KS2 reading content domain (2a–2h), so you can see at a glance which skills each pupil, and the whole class, needs next. Not tied to a season: use it in any term.

WHAT’S INCLUDED

  • Reading booklet with three original texts
  • Answer booklet: 26 questions in SATs style (tick one, find and copy, true or false, ordering, explain)
  • Mark scheme with accepted answers and guidance for 2-mark questions
  • Question map showing the content domain and marks for every question
  • Class record sheet for 30 pupils, by text and by domain
  • Teacher notes: printing, timing (45 minutes), marking and EAL access

THE THREE TEXTS

  • The Fox at Number Twelve (story, 12 marks)
  • Hedgehogs: The Winter Sleepers (non-fiction, 11 marks)
  • The Old Oak (poem, 7 marks)

WHO IT’S FOR

Year 4, also good for the end of Year 3 or the start of Year 5. Many questions have answer choices, which helps EAL learners and less confident readers. A rough guide to the total score is included; this is not a standardised test. Print-ready A4 PDF.
