Write Like Dilly
A 22-Lesson Story-Led Creative Writing Programme**

This literacy teaching pack has been thoughtfully created by an award-winning children’s author, former Head of Literacy in Primary Education and retired headteacher, with all of the above in mind.

Its purpose is simple: to help children become writers by first helping them fall in love with a story.

Through Dilly Mouse and the Mysterious Sweets, children meet a lively, imperfect and wonderfully relatable character who actually narrates her own story! How cool is that! As they step inside Dilly’s thoughts, voice and tiny sweet shop world, they quickly begin to see themselves as storytellers too.

The teaching programme is designed primarily for Upper Key Stage 1 to Lower Key Stage 2.

The beautifully illustrated children’s chapter book is particularly suited to children aged 6–9, although younger children have already been scurrying around telling their stories of Dilly!

We start with a story, have a good old chat, explore some lovely words and then get writing. More than anything, I want children to enjoy the process and, most importantly, discover that they have stories of their own inside them.

What to expect in the pack

22 structured, teacher-led creative writing lesson plans, in both editable Word and PDF formats.

The first three chapters of Dilly Mouse and the Mysterious Sweets, so you can introduce children to Dilly’s world.

A progression chart to help you see how the writing skills and learning develop across the programme.

Clear teacher prompts, examples and supporting notes to guide each lesson.

Modelled, shared and guided writing, with differentiated opportunities for independent writing.

No worksheets. No busywork. Just purposeful, joyful writing.

Children can use their own literacy exercise books.

The emphasis is on listening, talking, thinking, imagining and then writing. Educators are using ‘Dilly’ as their cross-curricular topic. Give it a go, there is more than enough content.

A note about the book

Write Like Dilly is built around the story Dilly Mouse and the Mysterious Sweets. The book provides the characters, language and starting points for the 22 lessons, so you will need a copy to use the programme.

The book is available separately in paperback, Kindle and audiobook formats.
