The aim of this lesson is to evaluate how and why Nazi policy towards the Jews changed from persecution to systematic mass murder during Nazi Germany.

The lesson focuses on the development of Nazi policy towards the Jews, examining how the outbreak of the Second World War created new opportunities and led to a dramatic escalation in persecution. Students begin by putting key events into chronological order, helping them understand the development of Nazi anti-Semitic policies and why the beginning of the war was such an important turning point.

Students then investigate the Wannsee Conference and the Nazi decision to coordinate the ‘Final Solution’. They examine the increasingly systematic methods used by the Nazis to murder Jewish people, including mass shootings, mobile gas vans and extermination camps, and consider why the Nazis developed new methods of mass murder.

Using numbers, statistics and figures, students are challenged to understand the enormous scale of the Holocaust. They investigate what happened in the concentration and death camps and consider how the Nazis organised the mass murder of millions of Jewish people across Nazi-occupied Europe.

A range of contemporary and engaging video evidence is included throughout the lesson to support understanding and provide students with additional evidence. These clips are carefully selected to be suitable for classroom use and help students understand the scale and development of Nazi persecution.

The lesson is enquiry based, with a key question introduced at the start using a lightbulb activity and revisited throughout the lesson. This allows students to track their progress and develop a supported judgement about how and why Nazi persecution developed into genocide.

Included in this lesson:
Fully editable PowerPoint
Chronology activity on Nazi persecution
The Wannsee Conference
Mass shootings and mobile gas vans
The use of extermination camps and Zyklon B
Statistics showing the scale of the Holocaust
Differentiated questioning
Higher-order thinking activities

They will study (AO2) second-order concepts such as change and continuity in the role of women under Nazi rule, how Nazi policies transformed people's lives, and the causes and consequences of the Final Solution. The analysis and evaluation of sources (AO3) are developed through activities such as those included in the Nuremberg Laws and Kristallnacht lesson, while substantiated judgements (AO4) are developed through questions examining how far the Nazis controlled the Churches in Germany and the effectiveness of opposition to Nazi rule. The lessons are designed to be engaging, challenging and enquiry-based, with a key question introduced at the start of each lesson using a lightbulb enquiry question and revisited throughout the lesson to demonstrate students' progress in learning. The resources are also fully editable PowerPoint lessons, allowing you to adapt and change the materials to suit your own students and teaching style. The lessons are as follows: L1 The Nazis and the Economy L2 The Hitler Youth L3 The Role of Women in Nazi Germany L4 The Nazis and the Churches L5 Hitler's Hate List - Nazi Persecution L6 The Nuremberg Laws and Kristallnacht L7 The Final Solution L8 Opposition in Nazi Germany L9 The German Home Front 1939–45 (Free resource) Included within this Bundle: • Editable PowerPoint lessons GCSE examination practice throughout, with model answers to support students Retrieval practice activities Source analysis and evaluation activities Higher-order thinking tasks Suggested teaching strategies Enquiry-based learning activities using key questions Supported judgement and evaluation tasks Differentiated materials suitable for mixed-ability GCSE classes The lessons are designed to build students' knowledge, understanding and examination skills progressively, making this bundle particularly useful for teachers looking for ready-to-use AQA Germany resources covering Nazi Germany 1933–1945 while combining detailed content coverage with serious GCSE exam preparation.
