AQA A Level 1C The Tudors: England 1485-1603

The aim of this lesson is to assess the skills of Thomas Cromwell as Henry’s Chief Minister.

Students begin by examining Cromwell’s early life, background and rise to power before analysing the key talents that helped him become one of Henry VIII’s most trusted ministers.

They then evaluate and justify how successful Cromwell was in areas such as securing Henry VIII’s divorce, managing Parliament and leading the English Reformation.

The lesson also encourages higher-level thinking through comparisons with Cardinal Wolsey, allowing students to judge the similarities and differences between the two ministers, their leadership styles and their relationships with Henry VIII.

An engaging noughts and crosses plenary helps students revise and recall different historical interpretations and historiography linked to Cromwell, making the lesson both interactive and academically challenging.

The enquiry question is revisited throughout the lesson to demonstrate progress in learning and support deeper historical understanding across the wider Tudor unit.
