This lesson begins with a relatable starter asking students to reflect on misunderstandings caused by assuming others “should have known” something, leading into the core concept of Theory of Mind and its role in social cognition. AO1 knowledge is developed through clear explanations, short video support, and accessible examples that introduce false beliefs, intentional reasoning, and the development of ToM in early childhood.

Students deepen understanding through the Sally–Anne task, with a step-by-step breakdown of the aim, procedure, findings, and conclusions, alongside early evidence such as Meltzoff’s intentional reasoning research. Knowledge is then applied using exam-style AO2 scenarios (e.g. missing homework misunderstandings), supported by concise model answers.

AO3 evaluation is built using structured PEEL paragraphs, key research (e.g. Baron-Cohen, Bloom & German, Perner et al.), true/false questions, MCQs, and a dilemma-style debate on whether schools should make allowances for students who struggle with Theory of Mind. The lesson concludes with timed exam practice, peer assessment (WWW/EBI), and an interactive plenary.
