This engaging and comprehensive reading lesson develops children鈥檚 understanding of Chapter 5 - Dark is Fascinating - of Jill Tomlinson鈥檚 The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark, whilst building their vocabulary and comprehension skills.

Through an illustrated slideshow, children explore Plop鈥檚 meeting with the woman and her nature sketchbook, retrieve key information and infer why he misunderstands her unfinished drawing. They discuss his discoveries about night-time animals and consider how curiosity and fear can exist together.

The main task teaches children to summarise key information. Through a model, paired discussion and sentence starters, children select the main events, leave out smaller details and write a concise three-sentence summary in their own words.

The lesson includes:

  • A retrieval starter revisiting Chapter 4, with suggested answers;
  • Vocabulary activities with animated definitions;
  • Six retrieval questions with answers;
  • An inference question exploring Plop鈥檚 reaction to his unfinished portrait, with a model answer;
  • A structured introduction to summarising;
  • A model showing how to shorten a detailed passage;
  • An activity distinguishing main events from smaller details;
  • Sentence starters supporting children鈥檚 independent summaries;
  • A deeper-thinking challenge exploring Plop鈥檚 curiosity and fear;
  • A final learning review with self-assessment and an exit question.

Original illustrations feature throughout, with answers, suggested responses and teaching guidance provided in the slideshow notes. Children complete the main task in their books using support from the slides.

Ideal for whole-class or guided reading in upper KS1, particularly Year 2, with opportunities for paired discussion and supported independent writing. Children will need access to Chapter 5 of the novel.
