This lesson covers AQA Trilogy Combined Science specification 4.2.2.1 and introduces the human digestive system as a coordinated organ system. It is designed as a precursor to teaching enzymes and digestion, helping students revisit and secure knowledge of organ names and roles before moving on.

Students will:

  • Describe the human digestive system as a coordinated organ system that breaks food into small, soluble molecules for absorption
  • Explain the role of bile in the emulsification of fats and the neutralisation of stomach acid to allow enzymes to function effectively

The lesson includes retrieval quizzes, structured activities, and exam-style questions, making it ideal for KS4 classroom teaching or revision. There is also a reading passage for teachers to model reading out loud, to intonation, with tier two and three vocabulary identified. This text was written to a higher level and designed so that we teach up, supporting literacy and vocabulary of our students. The tasks in the PowerPoint are linked to using the reading passage as a resource. It has line numbers as well, similar to how texts in Egnlish departments are used.
