Pupils will explore the origins and meanings of familiar Christmas symbols, including Christmas trees, stars, angels, candles, wreaths, holly, ivy and bells. They will investigate how some symbols are connected to Christian beliefs, while others developed through cultural traditions, folklore and seasonal celebrations.

Key learning questions:

  • Why do people decorate their homes at Christmas?
  • What do Christmas stars, angels and candles represent?
  • Where did the Christmas tree tradition come from?
  • Do Christmas symbols have the same meaning for everyone?

Expected outcome: Pupils can identify familiar Christmas symbols and explain the meaning or tradition associated with at least one.
