Final writing outcome

A sequence of linked episodic narratives following three different Ruggles children across the same Saturday in Otwell, each finding a different small adventure in the streets, shops or fields of their interwar town. Pupils write three connected episodes, each grouped into its own paragraph, using ‘when’ and ‘because’ to join ideas and inverted commas to show the bustle of family talk.

  • Subordinating conjunctions ‘when’ and ‘because’ to express time and cause.
  • Inverted commas to punctuate direct speech.
Themes explored

Family love in a busy household, The daily life of a working-class family in interwar Britain, Comic small adventures of ordinary children, The dignity and pride of ordinary working life.
