The Disgusting Sandwich – Fun Instruction Writing

Bring instruction writing to life with this fun and engaging lesson inspired by The Disgusting Sandwich by Gareth Edwards. The story provides a brilliant springboard for creating imaginative, disgusting sandwich instructions that children will love writing.

This resource is fully resourced and ready to teach, including:

  • Visual vocabulary word banks to support children’s ideas
  • Lined writing paper with a themed disgusting sandwich border
  • An adaptable structure that can easily be adjusted to suit your class

Children begin by discussing the story and generating disgusting vocabulary before exploring expanded noun phrases. They then create their own ingredients list, collaboratively model a set of instructions and finally use their own ideas to write a disgusting sandwich method. There are links to different grammar such as imperative verbs, time connectives, adverbs and expanded noun phrases within this lesson.

Please note: the book pages are not included in this resource, but read-alongs can be easily found online to share with your class before or during the lesson.
