This lesson explores the Agricultural Revolution and examines the extent to which it helped create the conditions for Britain鈥檚 Industrial Revolution. Through a mixture of discussion, source analysis, independent research and extended writing, students investigate how changes in farming transformed British society and the economy.

Students begin by revisiting their understanding of the Industrial Revolution before considering what growing towns and cities needed in order to develop. They then explore four key agricultural developments: the Enclosure Acts, Jethro Tull鈥檚 seed drill, crop rotation and selective breeding. Using information stations and structured note-taking activities, students identify how each innovation increased food production, improved efficiency and changed patterns of employment.

The lesson then uses football badges as a unique lens through which to examine the impact of selective breeding. Students research the Suffolk Punch, Hereford Bull and Dorking Chicken through a series of articles, evaluating how these breeds benefited farmers and contributed to Britain鈥檚 industrial growth.

The lesson concludes with an extended PEE-written response evaluating how the Agricultural Revolution fuelled the Industrial Revolution, supported by success criteria, model answers and a clear marking rubric. Support and challenge are embedded throughout via scaffolds, guided questions, structured writing frames, analytical discussion tasks and evaluative judgement activities, ensuring accessibility for a wide range of learners.
