    Who Was Upton Sinclair?
Upton Sinclair (1878-1968) was an American writer and social reformer who believed that literature could change society. He
wrote more than ninety books, many of them exposing unfair or unsafe conditions in American life. He spent weeks in
Chicago’s meatpacking neighborhood to gather the details that fill this novel.
    Chicago and the Meatpacking Industry
The story takes place in the early 1900s, when Chicago was one of the busiest industrial cities in the world. Its giant stockyards
and packinghouses employed tens of thousands of workers and shipped meat across the country. Most workers were recent
immigrants who earned very little and had few legal protections.
A Novel Meant to Spark Change
Sinclair wrote this novel as a muckraking work, meaning he wanted to uncover problems the public did not know about. He
hoped readers would sympathize with immigrant workers and question how wealth and power were used. Many people at the
time were shocked by what they read, and the book became part of a national conversation about food safety and workers’
    rights.
