Develop maths literacy and strengthen pupils’ understanding of essential statistics vocabulary with this Level 2 Developing Match-Up pack.

The resource includes 10 ready-to-use activities, 100 term-and-definition matches, complete solutions and an accompanying PowerPoint for whole-class teaching.

Many pupils can calculate averages or interpret statistical diagrams but struggle to understand and accurately use the specialist language found in lessons and examination questions. This resource provides a structured, low-preparation way to embed literacy in maths lessons while reinforcing key KS3 and GCSE statistics knowledge.

Vocabulary included

Averages and data measures: arithmetic mean, lower quartile, upper quartile, frequency and outlier.

Collecting data and sampling: population, sample, random sample, stratified sample, questionnaire, bias, primary data and secondary data.

Organising and presenting data: categorical data, grouped data, class interval, frequency table, frequency polygon and stem-and-leaf diagram.

Time and probability from data: time series, moving average and relative frequency.

Relationships between variables: positive correlation, negative correlation, no correlation, causation and the phrase correlation is negative.

Each activity contains 10 lettered terms and 10 numbered definitions. Pupils read carefully and match each term to its precise meaning, developing vocabulary, retrieval, reasoning and mathematical communication.

The activities help pupils distinguish between commonly confused concepts such as population and sample, random and stratified sampling, primary and secondary data, correlation and causation, and lower and upper quartiles.

The included PowerPoint allows each task to be displayed and discussed with the whole class. Printable PDF worksheets and full solution pages are also provided for independent work, paired discussion, self-assessment or quick teacher marking.

Ideal for KS3 maths, GCSE Foundation preparation, maths literacy, starters, plenaries, retrieval practice, revision, intervention, homework, cover lessons, tutoring, mixed-attainment classes, EAL learners and SEN support.

Part of the Beyond Printables Literacy in Maths Suite.
