Staff workload and wellbeing sits in the leadership and governance area of Ofsted’s school inspection toolkit. This pack gives leaders what they need to find out what staff experience, act on the biggest burdens and show what changed.

What’s inside

00 Cover and contents (PDF, 1 page)

01 Leaders’ guide (PDF, 2 pages): what inspectors consider, where schools fall short, a four-week cycle to run this term and what good evidence looks like.

02 Staff survey (editable Word): anonymous, about seven minutes, twelve statements grouped under the toolkit’s three areas plus three open questions.

02b Survey results tracker (Excel, 4 tabs): enter responses and it works out results by statement and by role, and compares two rounds.

03 Workload audit and action plan (editable Word): list every regular demand, decide keep, cut or change, plan the changes, tell staff, and report to governors with ready-made questions.

Based on Ofsted’s State-funded school inspection toolkit v2.0 (June 2026) and Ofsted’s October 2026 evaluation of its renewed approach to inspection. Not official guidance.
