Explore one of Moscow’s most recognisable landmarks with this engaging St. Basil’s Cathedral reading comprehension resource.

Students will learn about the colourful cathedral standing on Red Square in Moscow and discover why its onion-shaped domes, detailed patterns and unusual layout have made it one of the most famous buildings in Russia.

The reading passages introduce the cathedral’s official name, the Cathedral of the Intercession, and explain why it later became popularly known as St. Basil’s Cathedral.

Students will discover that Tsar Ivan IV, also known as Ivan the Terrible, ordered the cathedral to be built between 1555 and 1561 to commemorate a major victory over the Kazan Khanate.

The resource explores the cathedral’s unusual design as a complex of connected churches and chapels rather than one large interior space. Students will learn how narrow passages, galleries, towers and individually decorated domes create its distinctive appearance.

The passages also explain that St. Basil’s did not always look exactly as it does today. Its onion-shaped domes and famous colourful decoration developed over time, giving the cathedral the appearance now recognised around the world.

Students will also learn about the cathedral’s place on Red Square and its connection to the Kremlin and Red Square UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The included comprehension questions encourage students to identify key information, recall historical facts, understand vocabulary and explain why St. Basil’s Cathedral became such an important architectural and cultural landmark.
