The two guiding questions for this lesson are:

  1. Why do we need protection and safety when using social media?
  2. What happens if we don’t protect ourselves?

There are 6 reasons for Q one which can be used as talking points/ notes to copy depending on the ability of the class.

For Q 2 there are some suggested consequences: cyberbullying, contact with unsafe people, scams, hacking, identity theft

There is a short viewing activity on ClickView about cyberbullying.

This PTT then leads to an Australian victim of cyberbullying who took her own life (Dolly Everett). There is a video from the website Dolly’s Dream (which her parents established after her death).

Another event: Safer Internet Day

A useful website from the Australia government: eSafety

Fast finisher: Portrayals of cyber bullying in the media

  • A brief summary of places you can find films / tv shows that feature cyberbullying and its consequences. Sometimes there are links to trailers to play.

Resources designed for the new senior Social and Community Studies syllabus (implemented in QLD in 2024). Topic: Digital Citizenship. The end of term assessment for this unit was a product (Information Booklet / Pamphlet / Brochure).
