A complete Year 1 Short-Burst Writing programme for Term 2 designed to support the English National Curriculum across Autumn, Spring and Summer Terms.

This resource includes 12 short, focused writing lessons designed to be delivered in approximately 10–15 minutes. The lessons gradually develop pupils from orally rehearsing and writing simple sentences to independently checking and improving their work.

Throughout the year, children practise key Year 1 writing skills including capital letters, full stops, word spacing, adjectives, conjunctions, question marks, exclamation marks, plural endings, simple past and present tense, time words and sentence sequencing.

Each short burst is designed to be engaging, manageable and easy to incorporate into an existing English lesson. A variety of fun themes and picture prompts help children apply grammar skills across different contexts rather than linking them to one particular writing genre.

The progression follows:

Autumn: SAY IT → WRITE IT → PUNCTUATE IT
Spring: BUILD IT → DESCRIBE IT → SEQUENCE IT
Summer: WRITE IT → CHECK IT → IMPROVE IT

Ideal for daily writing practice, grammar starters, Talk for Writing sessions, interventions or whole-class English lessons.
