Year 1 Number and Place Value: SEN Small-Steps Pack (with foundation steps)

A complete, ready-to-teach unit for neurodivergent learners, mapped to the Year 1 National Curriculum (England) and the pre-key stage 1 standards. It’s written by a former UK teacher and AudHD coach, designed for autistic, ADHD, AudHD and other SEN learners, and works in mainstream classrooms, SEN bases and home education.

Year 1 number and place value is broken into 12 small steps, starting with 4 foundation steps for children working below Year 1:

F1 One and lots
F2 Counting to 5
F3 Counting to 10
F4 Seeing small groups
1 Numbers and words to 10
2 Same amount, different shape
3 One more and one less
4 More, fewer and equal
5 Number tracks to 20
6 Teen numbers
7 Counting to 100
8 Counting in 2s, 5s and 10s

What’s included (56 A4 pages)

12 one-page lesson plans with the same calm, predictable five-part routine: check in, warm up, hands on, show me, finished
24 worksheets: Sheet A (with an example and support) and Sheet B (on my own) for every step
9 printables: lesson routine strip, check-in and help cards, now and next board, number cards 0 to 20, ten frames, number track and line, 100 square, key word cards
An “I can progress tracker, useful for SEN reviews, EHCP evidence and home education records
A certificate, plus guidance on hard days and adapting for your child, including demand-avoidant (PDA) profiles

Why it works for neurodivergent learners

Small, predictable steps with objects first, then pictures, then numbers
Uncluttered, low-text worksheets in Lexend, a font designed for easier reading
Regulation support built into every lesson
Easier and harder options on every plan
No teaching background needed

Formats: a print-ready PDF and a fully editable PowerPoint, so you can personalise the sheets with your learner’s interests.
