A cross-curricular KS2 maths and healthy eating challenge for Y3–Y6. Design a school meal deal for £3.50 using real nutritional data. Active learning throughout.

Pupils take on the role of school canteen advisers, choosing one snack, one main, and one drink from a menu of 14 items to build a meal deal priced at exactly £3.50. Each item comes with full nutritional data (sugar, fat, salt, fibre and protein), and the meal deal must meet five health rules to qualify. There are then three distinct challenges to solve: the tastiest deal that meets the rules, the healthiest deal, and the most profitable one.

The three-challenge structure means every pupil can engage at their own level, and the open-ended nature of the task generates plenty of debate. Strong links to both KS2 Mathematics (addition, decimals, money) and Science (nutrition and healthy eating).

This activity is one of HUNDREDS of resources on the Tykeoons primary financial education platform.
