A complete revision and exam practice pack for SB7h Osmoregulation, covering the full Pearson Edexcel GCSE Biology (9–1) specification for this topic (B7.10Bb, B7.18B, B7.21B, B7.22B).

This pack contains three components:

Topic Mastery Sheet (PDF) - a comprehensive reference covering the importance of osmoregulation, the structure of the urinary system, urea formation, kidney dialysis and organ donation. Osmoregulation is defined as the control of water and mineral ion balance in the body, with the consequences of imbalance explained using osmosis: if blood is too dilute, water enters cells and they may swell and burst; if too concentrated, water leaves cells and they shrink. The urinary system diagram labels kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra, with a note distinguishing ureter (kidney to bladder, two of them) from urethra (bladder to outside, one of them) - a distinction that appears in matching questions. Urea formation is stated using the exact Edexcel wording: urea is produced by the deamination of excess amino acids in the liver. The dialysis section explains the partially permeable membrane, why urea diffuses out down its concentration gradient, and why glucose stays in the blood because the dialysis fluid contains the same concentration of glucose as blood. Both kidney dialysis and organ donation are evaluated with advantages and disadvantages for the six-mark extended writing question that appears on this topic.

Student Exam Practice Sheet (PDF + DOCX) - five exam-style questions. Q1 asks students to state how urea is produced, naming the organ and the molecules broken down (2 marks). Q2 asks them to describe the role of the kidneys in the urinary system (2 marks). Q3 asks students to explain why osmoregulation is important for animal cells, requiring the osmosis mechanism and the consequences of both directions of imbalance (3 marks). Q4 asks students to describe how kidney dialysis removes waste products, requiring reference to the partially permeable membrane, diffusion and the dialysis fluid composition (3 marks). Q5 is the six-mark evaluate question on dialysis versus kidney transplant, assessing both advantages and disadvantages of each.

Teacher Answer Key (PDF + DOCX) - a full mark scheme. The Q1 answer uses the exact Edexcel mark scheme wording: “produced in the liver (1) by the deamination of excess amino acids (1).” The Q2 mark scheme accepts any two of: filtering/cleaning the blood, regulating/balancing the amount of water in the blood, forming urine. The Q5 mark scheme follows the Edexcel level-of-response format for extended writing, with indicative content for dialysis and transplant separated clearly, and a note that full marks require substantial coverage of both treatments.

SB7 Animal Coordination, Control and Homeostasis | Complete Topic Mastery Bundle | Edexcel GCSE Biology (9–1) Separate Science

A complete revision and exam practice bundle covering the full **SB7 Animal Coordination, Control and Homeostasis** unit of the Pearson Edexcel GCSE Biology (9-1) Separate Science specification. This bundle brings together all 9 individual topic packs into one discounted resource, giving teachers and students everything they need to master this unit from first teaching through to final exam preparation. Each pack in this bundle has been built directly from the official Edexcel specification, teaching and learning materials, and mark schemes. Every answer has been verified against the Edexcel mark scheme. Every question is written in authentic Edexcel exam style with correct command words, mark allocations and answer space. This bundle contains 9 complete topic packs: **SB7a Hormones**: Covers where hormones are produced, how they are transported through the bloodstream, the production and release of hormones from the pituitary gland, thyroid gland, pancreas, adrenal glands, ovaries and testes, and the identification of target organs. **SB7b Hormonal Control of Metabolic Rate (H)**: Covers adrenalin and the fight-or-flight response, the definition of metabolic rate, the effect of thyroxine on metabolic rate, and how negative feedback controls thyroxine production and why this mechanism is essential. **SB7c The Menstrual Cycle**: Covers the events of the menstrual cycle, the roles of oestrogen and progesterone, barrier and hormonal methods of contraception, and comparative evaluation of both. **SB7d Hormones and the Menstrual Cycle (H)**: Covers the interactions of oestrogen, progesterone, FSH and LH across the cycle, effects on the uterus wall, ovulation and menstruation, Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART), clomifene therapy, and how hormones are used in IVF treatment. **SB7e Control of Blood Glucose**: Covers the definition of homeostasis, why a constant internal environment is important, the role of insulin in blood glucose regulation, the role of glucagon (H), and the causes and management of type 1 diabetes. **SB7f Type 2 Diabetes**: Covers the causes and control of type 2 diabetes, the correlation between body mass and type 2 diabetes, BMI and waist-to-hip ratio as measures of body mass, and evaluation of the evidence for this correlation. **SB7g Thermoregulation**: Covers the definition of thermoregulation, the importance of temperature regulation for enzyme activity, the roles of the skin (blood flow in dermis, sweating, hair erection), the hypothalamus, muscles (shivering), and vasodilation/vasoconstriction (H). **SB7h Osmoregulation**: Covers the structure of the urinary system, urea formation from excess amino acids, the definition of osmoregulation, why it is important, and how kidney failure is treated by dialysis and organ donation. **SB7i The Kidneys**: Covers the structure of the nephron, the composition of urine, how the nephron performs ultrafiltration, selective reabsorption of glucose and water, and the role of ADH in controlling body water content (H). Every pack in this bundle contains five files. A **Topic Mastery Sheet** (PDF) - a comprehensive reference covering the full specification for that subtopic. Each sheet includes full specification coverage with spec reference codes, all key definitions and mechanisms explained in depth, worked examples using actual Edexcel exam figures, comparison tables and process diagrams, common errors explicitly flagged with the correct exam language, and a stretch and challenge section for students targeting Grade 8–9. A **Student Exam Practice Sheet** (PDF and DOCX) - five to seven exam-style questions escalating from recall through to extended writing. Questions use correct Edexcel command words, include mark allocations, and are sized with appropriate answer space. The DOCX version allows teachers to adapt questions for their class. A **Teacher Answer Key** (PDF and DOCX) - a full tick-point mark scheme verified against the official Edexcel mark scheme. Each answer includes the exact wording required, examiner notes on what is and is not accepted, full working for all calculation questions, and level descriptors for any extended writing questions. All resources are designed for whole-class use in mixed ability settings. Higher tier content is clearly tagged throughout. Questions escalate from foundation recall to higher extended writing within every sheet, so every student is working towards excellence without anyone being left behind or held back. Suitable for end-of-topic revision lessons, independent study, homework, intervention sessions, exam preparation in Year 10 and Year 11, cover lessons, and as a take-home revision pack for students. Teachers can project the Topic Mastery Sheet, set the Student Sheet as classwork or homework, and mark against the Answer Key without any additional preparation. Buying **this bundle saves approximately 40%** compared to purchasing each pack individually. All 45 files are included in a single download. ©BoxsiderResources.
