This DP Business Management Unit Planner provides a complete, ready-to-use unit for 1.1 What is a Business? (IB Business Management First Assessment 2024). Designed for a combined SL/HL classroom in Year 1, Semester 1, Week 1.

What’s inside?

Complete unit structure covering nature of business (factors of production, value added), primary/secondary/tertiary/quaternary sectors, entrepreneurship (entrepreneur vs intrapreneur vs franchisee), and challenges/opportunities using the STEEPLE framework. No HL-only content – this foundational lesson underpins the entire two-year course.

Teaching activities – Sector Safari card-sort (16 international business cards with boundary cases), Mystery Business guessing game (inferential reasoning about value-added chains), Data-response gallery walk (sector-employment charts for contrasting economies), Entrepreneur STEEPLE pitch (90-second start-up justification), Pitch to the Bank role-play (entrepreneur vs sceptical loan officer), Jigsaw reading + Socratic seminar (Are entrepreneurs born or made?).

Assessment – Formative (card-sort justifications, pitch peer-assessment, exit tickets) and Summative (20-minute progress check with short-answer and stimulus-based questions featuring a vertical farming case study).

Differentiation – Scaffolding (sentence frames, simplified extracts, pre-filled grids), extension (research global entrepreneurs, evaluate platform businesses), and diverse entrepreneurship role models from multiple regions.

Cross-curricular connections – TOK (classification, perspectives on success), CAS (micro-enterprise design, service), ESS, Economics, Global Politics, English A, and Mathematics.

ATL skills – Thinking, Social, Communication, Self-management, and Research.

Resources – Cambridge University Press (Stimpson & Smith 2023) & IBID Press (Hoang 2023) coursebooks, Investopedia, World Bank Open Data, OECD Data, Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, Khan Academy, Revision Village, IB Programme Resource Centre, IBQuestionbank, Tutor2u, Kognity, plus printed classroom materials (Sector Safari cards, Mystery Business clue cards, gallery-walk posters, STEEPLE templates, role-play cue cards, jigsaw extracts).

Common misconceptions – All businesses maximise profit, sector classification is always clear-cut, entrepreneurs are just lucky, and a good idea is all that matters – all addressed with counters.
