The aim of this lesson is to evaluate the problems and hardships faced by German civilians at home during the Second World War.

The lesson examines how the experience of war for German civilians changed dramatically between the beginning and the end of the conflict. Students investigate why the war initially appeared to have some positive effects for German people, before assessing how the increasingly destructive nature of the war and Nazi policies made life much more difficult as Germany moved towards defeat.

Students are given extensive contextual knowledge alongside a range of challenging and engaging activities designed to prepare them for the typical GCSE examination questions. They are encouraged to consider how and why the impact of war changed over time, rather than simply describing the problems civilians experienced.

Students use information from BBC Bitesize to develop their knowledge and then apply it through a Thinking Quilt and Summarising Pyramid. These activities help students identify the most important problems faced by civilians, organise their knowledge and develop clear explanations about the changing impact of the war.

The lesson also examines the growing problems caused by Allied bombing, food and consumer shortages, rationing, evacuation, conscription and the increasing demands of Total War. Students are challenged to explain why life became increasingly difficult as Germany suffered military defeats and the war moved onto German territory.
Towards the end of the lesson, students apply their knowledge to GCSE-style examination questions. A simplified mark scheme and model answers are provided to help students understand what a successful answer looks like and improve their ability to explain, analyse and reach supported judgements.

The lesson is enquiry based, with a key question introduced at the start using a lightbulb activity and revisited throughout the lesson. This allows students to track their progress and develop a supported judgement about how far the war changed the lives of German civilians.

AQA GCSE Germany 1890-1945 Democracy and Dictatorship: Nazi Rule, Persecution & Opposition Lessons Bundle

This 9-lesson bundle is the third and final part in a complete series of resources I have created for AQA GCSE 9–1 Germany 1890–1945: Democracy and Dictatorship. Designed specifically for the AQA GCSE History specification, this bundle provides a structured teaching sequence covering the Nazi economy, Hitler Youth, the role of women, the Churches, Nazi persecution, the Nuremberg Laws, Kristallnacht, the Final Solution, opposition to the Nazis and life on the German Home Front during the Second World War. The lessons combine detailed contextual knowledge with regular GCSE examination practice, helping students develop the skills required to achieve the highest grades. Rather than simply learning the content, students are repeatedly challenged to explain, analyse, evaluate and reach substantiated judgements. The lessons will allow students to demonstrate (AO1) knowledge and understanding of the key features and characteristics of the period studied, from the Hitler Youth and Nazi economic policies to the treatment of different groups in Nazi Germany and life during the Second World War. They will study (AO2) second-order concepts such as change and continuity in the role of women under Nazi rule, how Nazi policies transformed people's lives, and the causes and consequences of the Final Solution. The analysis and evaluation of sources (AO3) are developed through activities such as those included in the Nuremberg Laws and Kristallnacht lesson, while substantiated judgements (AO4) are developed through questions examining how far the Nazis controlled the Churches in Germany and the effectiveness of opposition to Nazi rule. The lessons are designed to be engaging, challenging and enquiry-based, with a key question introduced at the start of each lesson using a lightbulb enquiry question and revisited throughout the lesson to demonstrate students' progress in learning. The resources are also fully editable PowerPoint lessons, allowing you to adapt and change the materials to suit your own students and teaching style. The lessons are as follows: L1 The Nazis and the Economy L2 The Hitler Youth L3 The Role of Women in Nazi Germany L4 The Nazis and the Churches L5 Hitler's Hate List - Nazi Persecution L6 The Nuremberg Laws and Kristallnacht L7 The Final Solution L8 Opposition in Nazi Germany L9 The German Home Front 1939–45 (Free resource) Included within this Bundle: • Editable PowerPoint lessons GCSE examination practice throughout, with model answers to support students Retrieval practice activities Source analysis and evaluation activities Higher-order thinking tasks Suggested teaching strategies Enquiry-based learning activities using key questions Supported judgement and evaluation tasks Differentiated materials suitable for mixed-ability GCSE classes The lessons are designed to build students' knowledge, understanding and examination skills progressively, making this bundle particularly useful for teachers looking for ready-to-use AQA Germany resources covering Nazi Germany 1933–1945 while combining detailed content coverage with serious GCSE exam preparation. After completing this unit, I strongly recommend setting a full GCSE mock examination to assess students' knowledge and identify areas for further revision.
