Students have the opportunity to use a range of historical sources and interpretations to decide how far Mary I deserved the nickname ‘Bloody Mary’.

An 18 slide fully resourced and teacher created lesson including:

• Slide 1: Title slide
• Slide 2: Warm Up - Analysis of Mary I portrait with prompt questions provided and information in the notes slide.
• Slide 3: Warm Up 2 - Students discuss the idea of a nickname and why they are given. Prompt and challenge questions given linked to Mary I.
• Slide 4-5: Starter - Students decide which statement is correct regarding when and why the nickname of Bloody Mary came about. Answer provided with explanation.
• Slide 6-8: Background information about Mary’s reign, each slide with a follow up question to check student knowledge.
• Slide 9-10: A link to a 25 minute documentary about Mary I. Printable question sheet provided.
• Slide 11-12: Task - Students study two historical interpretations of Mary. Includes a printable worksheet.
• Slide 13-15: Task - Students provided with a source and interpretation sheet and a printable table. Students need to read the sources to decide if Mary deserved the nickname or not.
