The Vape Investigation: Who Is Selling You What? is a complete, interactive 60-minute PSHE lesson for students aged 16–18, exploring vaping, nicotine, health risks, social-media influence and the marketing techniques used to shape young people’s decisions.

Part of the LIFE 101: Drugs, Alcohol & Real-Life Decisions series, this lesson encourages students to become critical investigators rather than passive recipients of health information.

Through engaging investigations, fictional social-media posts, practical calculations and realistic university scenarios, students explore the evidence surrounding vaping and develop the skills needed to question misleading claims.

What Will Students Learn?

Students investigate:

  • What vaping is and how e-cigarettes work
  • Nicotine, addiction and dependence
  • The difference between vaping and smoking
  • Why less harmful does not necessarily mean harmless
  • Health risks and uncertainties surrounding vaping
  • Social-media advertising and influencer marketing
  • How marketing influences young people’s choices
  • The financial cost of regular vaping
  • Peer pressure, refusal skills and informed decision-making

Engaging Student Activities

  1. The Vaping Claims Lab
Students investigate common statements about vaping, nicotine and health. Using evidence cards, they distinguish supported claims from misleading information and identify where scientific uncertainty remains.

  2. Social Media Marketing Detective
Students analyse fictional social-media posts promoting vaping products. They investigate persuasive language, imagery, implied benefits and missing health information.

  3. The Real Cost of Vaping
Students complete a practical numeracy challenge, calculating how regular vaping expenditure can accumulate over weeks, months and a year.

  4. University Decision Scenarios
Working collaboratively, students explore realistic situations involving vaping, peer pressure, nicotine dependence and supporting friends. They develop respectful, practical responses.

  5. The Investigative Newsroom Challenge
Students become investigative journalists, producing a 60-second evidence-based briefing that challenges misinformation and communicates accurate, balanced information about vaping.

  6. Peer Fact-Checking
Students evaluate one another’s briefings, checking accuracy, clarity, evidence and responsible communication.
