Alcohol Mythbusters: What Is Actually Happening? is a complete, interactive 60-minute PSHE lesson for students aged 16–18, designed to challenge common misconceptions about alcohol, develop critical thinking and prepare students for making informed decisions in social situations.

Part of the LIFE 101: Drugs, Alcohol & Real-Life Decisions series, this engaging lesson uses an investigative approach rather than traditional lectures or scare tactics.

Students become Alcohol Mythbusters, working collaboratively to examine evidence, investigate misleading claims, calculate alcohol units and apply their learning to realistic university-life scenarios.

What Will Students Learn?

Students will explore:

  • Common alcohol myths and misconceptions
  • How alcohol affects judgement, coordination and behaviour
  • Understanding alcohol units and drink strength
  • Recognising misleading information and unreliable claims
  • Peer pressure and strategies for refusing alcohol
  • Risks associated with excessive drinking
  • Recognising alcohol-related emergencies
  • Making informed, responsible decisions at university and social events

Engaging Student Activities

  1. Alcohol Mythbusters Investigation Stations
Students rotate through six interactive investigation stations, examining alcohol-related claims, evaluating evidence and challenging popular misconceptions.

  2. Alcohol Units Challenge
Students develop practical numeracy skills by calculating and comparing alcohol units in different drinks. This helps them understand why drink size and alcohol strength matter.

  3. University-Life Decision Scenarios
Working in groups, students investigate realistic situations involving parties, peer pressure, drinking decisions and personal safety. They must justify their choices and consider potential consequences.

  4. Refusal Skills and Safer Decisions
Students explore practical ways to manage social pressure, respect personal boundaries and support friends without judgement.

  5. Fact-Check Challenge
Students apply their learning by producing an evidence-based response to an alcohol-related claim, demonstrating their ability to distinguish fact from misinformation.
