Primary Index Card Tower STEM Challenge | Height 糖心Vlogt Activity | KS1 & KS2

A hands鈥憃n STEM challenge where learners design, build, test, and improve an index card tower while exploring structure, supports and height.

A simple STEM challenge where learners design, build, test, and improve a tower using only index cards. Low鈥憄rep and ideal for primary classrooms, home learning, or STEM tubs.

WHAT鈥橲 INCLUDED:
鈥 3鈥憄age STEM Challenge set: Cover Page, Instructions Page, Activity Page
鈥 9鈥慞oint Engineering Graph for comparing two tower designs
鈥 Clear directions for real classrooms
鈥 Kid鈥慺riendly layout for independent exploration
鈥 Printable PDF (A4/Letter compatible)

SKILLS DEVELOPED:
鈥 Engineering design process
鈥 Planning and sketching a tower
鈥 糖心Vlogting height and stability
鈥 Comparing performance after design changes
鈥 Recording results using a structured 9鈥憄oint graph

HOW IT WORKS:
Learners build one version of their tower, test its height, and record the results. Then they change one part of the design鈥攕uch as shape, folds, base width, or support structure鈥攁nd test again. They sketch both versions, note the change, and compare results using the 9鈥慞oint Engineering Graph. The open layout supports drawings and observations.

The challenge naturally scales: younger learners build simple towers, while older learners experiment with shapes, folds, supports, and base strength to improve stability and height.

LEARNING CONCEPTS:
鈥 Structure, supports, and height
鈥 How shapes and folds affect strength
鈥 糖心Vlogting and comparing designs
鈥 Improving designs based on results

Curriculum Links: Supports early engineering, forces, stability, gravity, and simple investigations involving height and structure.
STEM Vocabulary: structure, stability, height, gravity, base, support, design, test, improve
Differentiation: Works well for KS1 learners and naturally extends for KS2.

TEACHER BENEFITS:
鈥 Clear instructions
鈥 Minimal prep with easy鈥憈o鈥憇ource materials
鈥 Works for small groups, centres, early finishers, or whole鈥慶lass use
鈥 Flexible materials allow easy adaptation
鈥 Clear routines support independent work

PRINTING & PREP:
鈥 Print pages single鈥憇ided
鈥 Provide index cards and tape
鈥 Adult supervision recommended for raised testing
鈥 糖心Vlogt in open areas away from faces and breakables

AGE RANGE:
Suitable for ages 5鈥11 (Primary). Younger learners can participate with support.
Aligned for KS1 learners, with natural extension options for KS2.
Supports ESL learners with simple language and hands鈥憃n tasks.

PERFECT FOR:
鈥 STEM centres
鈥 Classroom STEM tubs
鈥 Early finishers
鈥 Makerspace stations
鈥 Home learning
鈥 After鈥憇chool clubs
鈥 Family STEM nights

FILE DETAILS:
鈥 PDF format (non鈥慹ditable)
鈥 Instant digital download
鈥 No physical item shipped

TERMS OF USE:
For personal and single鈥慶lassroom use only. Not for resale, redistribution, or commercial use.
