The aim of this lesson is to evaluate how English planning, leadership and naval innovation contributed to the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588.

Students begin by investigating how Elizabeth I and her commanders prepared England for the Spanish invasion. They explore the strengths of the English navy, including improved ship design, long-range naval artillery, experienced commanders and effective defensive planning, before assessing which factors were most significant in England’s victory.

Using a range of differentiated activities, students analyse the importance of key individuals including Lord Howard of Effingham, Sir Francis Drake, Sir John Hawkins and Sir Martin Frobisher. They evaluate how leadership, experience and innovation combined to give England a significant advantage over the Spanish fleet.

Students also develop higher-level analytical skills by completing causation equations, linking factors together to produce sustained lines of reasoning required for the highest GCSE marks. They consider the relationship between English planning, Spanish mistakes and the role of weather before reaching an overall judgement on why the Armada was defeated.

The lesson concludes with GCSE exam practice supported by model answers, examiner-style guidance and common misconceptions, helping students avoid narrative responses and instead produce analytical explanations in line with AQA mark schemes and Getting to Grips with Elizabethan England guidance.

An enquiry question is introduced at the start of the lesson and revisited throughout, enabling students to track their progress and deepen their understanding of the reasons for England’s victory over the Spanish Armada.

Fully planned and ready to teach, this lesson develops historical enquiry, causation, significance, evaluation and GCSE exam technique.
