This lesson covers:

•Observe videos demonstrating reactions between period 3 and oxygen. Students note observations, write equations and identify oxidation number of the elements
•Class demo showing the reaction of sodium then magnesium with water. Students follow this up by writing the balanced equations and complete additional questions
•Student practical investigating the change in pH across period 3 with the products from their reactions with water.
•Content is covered to explain why the pH changes as well as how and why bonding changes across the period
•Students complete a set of questions linking properties of the period 3 elements to their bonding and structure and describing how this changes across the period
