Lesson 9: Students examine the reasons for Pope Pius V’s Papal Bull and the excommunication of Elizabeth I and the impact this had on Elizabeth’s religious policies towards Catholics after 1570.

A 19 slide fully resourced lesson containing warm up & learning review activities, a choice of tasks, printable resources and a printable knowledge organiser with all background knowledge:

  • Slide 1: Title slide
  • Slide 2-4: Northern Rebelliion recap - 8 multiple choice questions with answers and printable sheet for students.
  • Slide 5-6: Starter Activity 1 - Students decide which of the four options best describes Elizabeth’s religious policy before and after 1570. Answer provided with challenge question.
  • Slide 7: Starter Source Analysis - Students examine two sources and have to infer what they teach them about Elizabeth’s religious policy before and after 1570.
  • Slide 8: Background information covering the extent of the Catholic threat before 1570.
  • Slide 9: Background information covering the features of the Papal Bull
  • Slide 10: Background information covering the impact of the Papal Bull
  • Slide 11: Background information covering Elizabeth’s reaction to the Papal Bull.
  • Slide 12-13: Task - Students are prompted to write a letter from William Cecil to Elizabeth outlining the Papal Bull. A printable writing frame provided.
