Trying to get children to remember the difference between area and perimeter indoors often feels like an endless loop of drawing abstract boxes on grid paper. Sometimes, they just need to physically walk the edge of a shape and stand in the middle for the geometry concepts to actually make sense.

This outdoor math lesson takes measurement off the page and onto the playground. Using playground chalk, measuring tapes (or trundle wheels), and sensible units, pupils work in pairs to draw, measure, and calculate the area and perimeter of large-scale rectangles and squares. It is a highly practical, low-prep way to make geometry concrete.

What’s Included in This Resource Pack:

Teacher’s Lesson Guide: A clear, one-page lesson plan covering minimal preparation, lesson introduction, the main outdoor activity, and math discussion/plenary points.

Pupil Recording Sheet: A straightforward, clean data table for children to log their shape, the units used, area calculations, and perimeter totals.

Why Take This Math Lesson Outside?
By physically constructing large shapes and managing large-scale measurements, children gain a tangible understanding of space (area) and distance (perimeter). This active math activity cuts down on worksheet fatigue and anchors math in real-world application. It fits neatly into a standard measurement block and works just as well for a full class of thirty as it does for a one-to-one home education session.
