Using Functions

Learners discover how built-in functions make calculations quicker and easier than writing formulae by hand. Using a shopping-list spreadsheet, they practise four key functions:

SUM: adds up a range of values
AVERAGE: finds the mean
MIN: finds the lowest value
MAX: finds the highest value

Along the way they learn how a function is set out: an equals sign, the function name, then a cell range inside brackets. They also learn to select a range by clicking and dragging, and to reuse the same steps for each function. By the end, they can confidently summarise a set of data with functions.
