The aim of this lesson is to assess the success of Nazi policies towards workers in creating a loyal and productive Volksgemeinschaft.

Students begin by investigating why the Nazis abolished independent trade unions and replaced them with the German Labour Front (DAF) under Robert Ley.

They explore the aims of the DAF and evaluate how it sought to improve industrial relations, increase productivity and eliminate class conflict while bringing workers under Nazi control.

The lesson then examines the key policies of the German Labour Front, including workers’ rights, wages, working conditions and labour discipline. Through a RAG (Red, Amber, Green) evaluation activity, students assess the successes and limitations of the DAF before reaching a balanced judgement on its effectiveness.

Students also investigate the Strength Through Joy (KdF) and Beauty of Labour (SdA) programmes, analysing how subsidised holidays, leisure activities, workplace improvements and welfare schemes were used to increase morale, productivity and loyalty to the Nazi regime. They evaluate whether these initiatives genuinely improved workers’ lives or simply acted as effective Nazi propaganda.

Using contemporary and modern sources, students develop their source analysis skills by evaluating interpretations of Nazi labour policy before applying their knowledge to A Level source and essay-style exam practice. Structured guidance and support are included throughout to help students develop confident analytical and evaluative responses.

An enquiry question is introduced at the start of the lesson and revisited throughout, enabling students to track their progress and develop a deeper understanding across the wider unit of study.

Fully planned and ready to teach, the lesson develops historical enquiry, source analysis, interpretation, evaluation and exam technique.

Nazi Dictatorship 1933–1939 Bundle | AQA A Level History: Democracy and Nazism, Germany 1918–1945

**AQA GCE 2O A Level Democracy and Nazism: Germany 1918-45** I have produced this complete bundle of resources on Nazi Germany 1933–39 to help A Level students develop a deeper understanding of how Hitler transformed Germany into a one-party dictatorship, established a totalitarian state and sought to create a Volksgemeinschaft through propaganda, terror, economic policies and social control. Students will explore how Hitler consolidated his power through the destruction of democracy, including the significance of the Night of the Long Knives, the death of Hindenburg, and the creation of the Führer state. They will examine the methods used by the Nazi regime to maintain control, including the role of the Gestapo, SS, concentration camps, censorship and terror, and evaluate how effectively fear and repression were used to secure obedience. Students will assess the effectiveness of Nazi propaganda, including the role of Joseph Goebbels, the Hitler Myth and the 1936 Berlin Olympics, considering how successfully the Nazis controlled public opinion and created the image of a powerful national leader. The bundle also examines Nazi economic policy, including autarky, the Four Year Plan, rearmament, the DAF, Strength Through Joy (Kraft durch Freude) and Beauty of Labour, allowing students to evaluate the impact of Nazi policies on workers and the German economy. Students will analyse the impact of Nazi social policies, including the indoctrination of young people through the Hitler Youth and League of German Girls, policies towards women, and attempts to control religious groups through the Churches and Nazi Christianity. Finally, students will investigate opposition and resistance to Nazi rule, assessing the extent of opposition from political groups, young people, workers and religious organisations. The resources provided include detailed lesson plans, case studies, contemporary sources for analysis, chronological activities, exam-style questions, model answers and comprehensive mark schemes. The lessons are as follows: L1 One-Party State (Free Resource) L2 The Night of the Long Knives and Hitler’s Consolidation of Power L3 The Nazi Terror State: SS, Gestapo and Repression L4 Opposition to Nazi Rule 1933–39 L5 Nazi Propaganda and the Hitler Myth L6 Nazi Economic Policy: Autarky, Rearmament and the Four Year Plan L7 Nazi Youth Policies: Hitler Youth and Indoctrination L8 Nazi Policies Towards Women and the Family L9 Nazi Workers’ Policies: DAF, Strength Through Joy and Beauty of Labour L10 The Nazis and the Churches The lessons include both types of AQA A Level exam questions, with guidance on how to approach each question type. Please refer to the AQA website for further assessment materials, as these are subject to copyright. The lessons are fully differentiated, fully resourced and designed to help students develop the analytical and evaluative skills required to achieve the highest marks at A Level History.
