KS3 Drama murder mystery scriptwriting lesson with an illustrated crime scene, witness statements, teachers’ notes and a detective-dialogue task.

Activities and learning

Pupils read a fictional murder mystery, compare witness accounts, consider suspects and motives, then write a scene in which a detective questions the characters and explains a conclusion. The Clue That Changes the Case helps pupils structure a revelation or reversal so that the audience can follow the evidence. The aim is dramatic writing and interpretation, not a forensic exercise with a guaranteed unique solution.

What’s included

  • 1 original illustrated pupil worksheet
  • Rewritten teachers’ notes with activity-by-activity guidance, approximate timings and suggestions for follow-up
  • 1 supplementary pupil activity: The Clue That Changes the Case
  • Printable PDF minipack; no editable Word version is included

Original worksheet titles

  • Murder Mystery

Using the resource

A desk-based cover lesson for a teacher who can supervise written work. The story involves a fatal stabbing and the original worksheet contains historical descriptions of disability; check suitability for the class and school before use. The updated notes distinguish clues from guesses and the intended historical solution from a logically proven answer.

2028 curriculum

The series is being prepared for the planned 2028 KS3 Drama curriculum. This resource supports creating, through scripting dialogue, developing motives and structuring revelations. Final alignment will be reviewed when statutory requirements are published, and updated files will be available to purchasers at no additional cost.

Part of the Chalkface Drama Cover Lessons for KS3 series. Original worksheets were published in Cover Lessons in Drama.
