Engaging, fully resourced IGCSE Geography lesson on the impacts of international migration, covering countries of origin, destination countries, migrants, remittances, brain drain, diaspora communities and migration dependency. Packed with interactive activities, data analysis, decision-making and evaluation, this lesson moves students beyond simple definitions and encourages them to investigate who really benefits from international migration – and who may face the greatest challenges.

Designed for IGCSE Geography, this lesson directly supports:
6.3.3 – The impacts of migration on the migrant, their country of origin and the destination country.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
Describe the positive and negative impacts of migration on countries of origin
Describe the positive and negative impacts on destination countries
Explain the impacts of migration on migrants themselves
Explain why different groups may view migration differently
Explain the importance of remittances
Distinguish between total remittance value and dependence on remittances
Explain how diaspora communities develop
Evaluate whether international migration creates more benefits than problems

LESSON ACTIVITIES INCLUDE:
WHO WINS? WHO LOSES?
A highly interactive starter that immediately gets students moving, thinking and debating.

Students must justify their decisions, introducing the idea that the impacts of migration are complex and different groups may experience the same migration flow in very different ways.

MPACTS ON COUNTRIES OF ORIGIN
Students investigate both the positive and negative impacts of emigration.

This provides students with clear geographical terminology and explanation points suitable for IGCSE examination questions.

IMPACTS ON DESTINATION COUNTRIES
Students explore how immigration may benefit destination countries

Students are encouraged to recognise that migration rarely creates entirely positive or entirely negative outcomes.

IMPACTS ON MIGRANTS
The lesson also examines migration from the perspective of migrants themselves.

REMITTANCES
Information on remittances, what are they, why they are important and how they are measured

ACTIVITY: REMITTANCE DATA DETECTIVES – BIG MONEY OR BIG DEPENDENCE?
Students take on the role of economic geographers working for an international development organisation.

Their challenge is to investigate:
“Which countries benefit most from remittances – and which countries could be dangerously dependent upon them?”

Using supplied data and worksheets, students analyse remittance patterns, compare countries and develop their graph and data interpretation skills.

This activity is excellent for developing:
Graph construction
Data interpretation
Comparison
Geographical explanation
Analysis
Evaluation
Evidence-based conclusions

DIASPORAS
Students are introduced to the concept of a diaspora

MAIN ACTIVITY
Migration speed dating

PLENARY
Summary activity on idea of Immigration
