Students investigate the methods which were used to attack a Medieval castle with a focus on weapons and the development of defensive castle design.

This pack includes:

  • A 20 slide fully resourced and teacher created lesson
  • A 4 page A4 set of worksheets

The lesson PPT includes:

  • Slide 1: Title slide
  • Slide 2-4: Warm Up - Students analyse the development of castle design with reference to motte and bailey, stone square keep and concentric castles. This is based on images showing the design development. Includes printable worksheet.
  • Slide 5: Learning Checkpoint - A four question task for students to show their understanding of the development of castles, their defences and relate this to how difficult they were to attack.
  • Slide 6: Background about the influence of the crusades and Islamic castle and weapon design.
  • Slide 7: Background about the use of the siege with questions and analysis.
  • Slide 8-10: An illustration based task for student to identify methods of castle attack from an image. Answers provided.
  • Slide 11-13: A match up task for students to learn facts about each method of attack. Includes printable resources.
  • Slide 14: A link to 6 clips which show further information about medieval weaponry.
  • Slide 15-16: Task - Students to complete a table analysing the facts, strengths and weaknesses of each weapon. Printable table included.
  • Slide 17: Follow up challenge questions.
  • Slide 18-19: Learning Review - Students should identify the weapon from a partial image. Answers includes.
